Individual Psychological Investigation

One-on-one therapy that uncovers the roots of addiction and builds a foundation for lasting change.

Overview

One-on-One Therapy for Deeper Understanding

Individual psychological investigation is at the heart of the therapeutic experience at RECO Island. In these private, one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist, you explore the personal history, thought patterns, emotional wounds, and relational dynamics that have contributed to your substance use. Unlike group settings, individual therapy provides a confidential space where you can go deeper into the experiences that are most personal and most important to your recovery.

Our therapists use a variety of evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care. The specific approach is tailored to your needs, personality, and treatment goals. This is not therapy by formula; it is therapy by relationship, insight, and genuine human connection.

How It Works

You will be matched with a licensed therapist during your first days at RECO Island. Sessions are scheduled regularly throughout your treatment stay, typically two to four times per week. Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes. Your therapist will work with you to identify the key themes and patterns in your life that have led to substance use, and together you will develop strategies for addressing those patterns in healthier ways.

The therapeutic process often begins with building trust and understanding your story. From there, your therapist may guide you through exploring childhood experiences, family dynamics, grief, trauma, shame, identity, and other deeply personal topics. The pace is guided by your readiness, and your therapist will never push you further than you are prepared to go.

What to Expect

Your first individual session will focus on getting to know you: your history, your goals, what brought you to treatment, and what you hope to achieve. From there, sessions will become progressively deeper as trust develops between you and your therapist. Some sessions may be emotionally intense, and that is a normal and healthy part of the process. Your therapist is trained to create a safe container for difficult emotions and to help you integrate new insights into your recovery.

Many patients describe individual therapy as the most transformative part of their time at RECO Island. The relationship you build with your therapist and the self-knowledge you gain become lasting resources that support your recovery long after treatment ends.
